The Creel Fish & Chips
About This Spot
Stepping into The Creel Fish & Chips on Porthmadog’s High Street feels like discovering a cherished community treasure. The comforting aroma of fresh fish frying gently hums in the background, inviting a slower pause amid the town’s coastal rhythm. Here, the atmosphere is unpretentious and warm, where locals and visitors alike gather around simple wooden tables, sharing moments over meals that feel thoughtfully prepared, not rushed or industrial.
The pace is relaxed but lively, marked by friendly exchanges between staff and guests that instantly ease you in. It’s the kind of place where a genuine smile from the person behind the counter carries as much weight as the food itself. Whether it’s a midday lunch break or a casual evening treat, the mood softly echoes the salt-kissed air outside—comforting, familiar, and quietly celebratory of good company.
Behind the counter, care shows in every detail of the menu. The fish—golden and crisp, yet never greasy—is a reminder of traditional British chippie fare done with mindful hands and quality ingredients. Accompaniments like mushy peas and freshly baked chip barm rounds bring a touch of home-style charm that makes each bite a little story. For families, there’s a thoughtful nod to younger tastes, ensuring mealtime feels inclusive and easy.
At The Creel, it’s not just about catching the freshest fish; it’s about creating moments that feel rooted in this coastal town’s rhythms and hospitality. Whether it’s the steady sizzle from the frying pans or the easy warmth in everyone’s voices, this place carries a genuine welcome that lingers long after the last crumb is savored.

This place has gone from strength to strength since moving to frying in beef dripping. The fish and chips are spot, fried perfectly without being greasy, and proper home made, not industrial, mushy peas as well. Smashing stuff. The lunch time special at 6 quid is still a bargain.

This is our first time at Porthmadog. We decided to visit “the Creel” fish and chip shop for an early tea. The lady who served us was extremely friendly to not only us but everyone that came in while we were there The food was delicious - not too greasy, great portion size. I would highly recommend

We walked to town to find something to eat and couldn't resist the wonderful smell of fish and chips from the creel fish and chip shop. It was rather cold and windy so we were delighted to see that they had some inside seating. Both ordered the lunchtime special that was the perfect size and beautifully cooked fish and chips. The Irish curry sauce was fantastic. Highly recommend visiting.
